High Risk Times

 

It is important for parents to be aware of the high risk times that occur during the academic year when students are more likely to engage in high risk drinking. Check in with your student. See how they are doing and encourage them to make good choices.

What is High Risk Drinking?

  • Drinking with the intent to get drunk
  • Drinking on an empty stomach
  • Drinking games
  • Using a funnel, hose, trough or punch bowl
  • Mixing alcohol with any medications (over the counter, prescription, or illicit)
  • Pre-gaming, Pre-partying
  • Drinking after having little to no sleep
  • Leaving your glass unattended or taking a drink that you have not seen poured or mixed

Some High Risk Periods during the Academic Year:

  • The first six weeks of school (pressure to socialize and fit in)
  • Right before, during or after midterm exams
  • Major sporting events
  • Relationship break ups
  • Fraternity and Sorority rush/recruitment
  • Bid Day
  • Spring Break
  • After Final Exams
  • Graduation
  • Birthdays
